Nationwide (UK Wide Coverage) UK Wide Coverage

There are thousands of tunnels in the UK, with more being built each year. The majority of tunnels are used for transport and utilities, but some man made, and natural tunnels are also found under construction and refurbishment sites. With tunnel development booming – evidenced by projects such as the Crossrail Program to deliver the new Elizabeth line in London - tunnel operators must ensure their worker’s protection and safety.

There are several key hazard areas associated with incidents in tunnels and underground structures (such as fires, structural collapse, oxygen deficiency – to name just a few). Fire protection is essential for anyone working in tunnel construction – as well as general health and safety aspects of working in this type of confined space.

There are two main tunnelling qualifications in the UK – both designed to ensure safe working in tunnels under construction. Both provide a minimum standard of health and safety knowledge, and it is recommended are obtained before anyone starts work in a tunnel.

Level 2 award in Tunnel Entry and Emergency Procedures (TEEP)

The Tunnel Entry and Emergency Procedures (TEEP) course is City and Guilds accredited. Delegates who attend the 1 day course will learn how to carry out activity and work in tunnel and shaft environments – this includes how to use industry equipment and tools and how to self-rescue with a chemical respirator. This course is awarded on successful completion of written and practical assessments.

The Tunnel Safety Training Scheme (TSTS)

The Tunnel Safety Training Scheme (TSTS) course is a CITB Site Safety Plus accredited course – which takes place in a classroom environment. Delegates who attend this 1 day course will complete modules which include:

  • Entry into a tunnel environment
  • Surface works and shafts
  • Tunnel construction
  • Tunnelling plant and equipment
  • Control of underground plant during tunnelling operations
  • Emergency arrangements
  • Occupational Health

The course concludes with a written assessment.
