STCW BASIC TRAINING UPDATE PACKAGE
Refresh your essential maritime safety skills with our 2-day STCW Basic Training Update Package.
This MCA-regulated STCW course package is designed for those needing to renew their STCW certification in compliance with the STCW 2010 regulations. It combines two key courses:
Both of these STCW Basic Training courses are mandatory for seafarers and must be renewed every five years to maintain competency in emergency procedures aboard vessels.
Delegates should be aware of the practical aspects of the training and the requirement to be fit and well enough to undertake the practical exercises.
This STCW Basic Training Update course package provides comprehensive practical training in both personal survival and firefighting skills, ensuring you are prepared for emergencies at sea. The two courses included are:
- Personal Survival Techniques
You will learn essential survival techniques, including:
- Proper use of life jackets and life rafts
- Emergency evacuation procedures
- How to stay afloat and survive in the water
- Techniques for maximising chances of rescue in open water
This hands-on STCW training will equip you with the knowledge and skills to respond confidently and safely during a maritime emergency.
- Updated Proficiency in Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
As part of this Updated STCW FPFF course, you will engage in practical exercises covering:
- Fire prevention methods and safe practices
- Use of firefighting equipment and breathing apparatus
- Fire extinguishing techniques and teamwork during firefighting operations
The training will take place at our fully equipped Fire Training Facility, with assessments conducted through direct observation, oral questioning, and simulated scenarios.
Both courses are delivered by experienced instructors who are experts in their respective fields. Our trainers have extensive experience in maritime safety, survival techniques, and firefighting procedures.
They are committed to ensuring that each participant gains the necessary confidence and competence to handle emergencies effectively at sea.

The courses are regulated by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and are in line with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping.
Those successfully completing the assessments for Personal Survival Techniques and the Updated Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting will be issued with certificates which are each valid for 5 years.

Just finished the STCW with MRS and genuinely couldn't recommend them highly enough. Concise and fun teaching, all practical aspects of the course were incredibly well thought through and safe. Matt as the lead instructor for the week was second to none - couldn't thank him enough. Charlie, who came in on the Friday to teach the first aid section of the course was also great. Thanks for everything guys!
I recently undertook an STCW course at this training centre the only thing better than the content were the tutors. Everyone at MRS really wants to see you pass and to help you get the best out of yourself during the course. Not only did the swimming pool that the centre usually use cancel due to an accidental double booking but some equipment we were meant to be training with was stolen the morning of one of the exams. MRS staff dealt with this swiftly and effectively by changing the pool and going to buy new equipment on the same day it was stolen to ensure we as the students still got the most out of the course. The pace of content is rapid due to the condensed course but there seemed to always be space to ask questions and make sure each of us understood the principles we were being taught. I couldn't recommend anywhere else in the UK that I would have had as much fun learning.
A very enjoyable course. Trainers very friendly and knowledgeable.
Very good course. I have a few things which I can take back and pass on to others as well as improve onboard procedures.
Interesting, informative, hands-on training. Very clear trainer.
