About this course
This training course covers what you need to know to work safely in low risk confined spaces including how to enter and work safely, how to recognise an emergency has occurred and then how to deal with it. It also includes updated National Occupational Standards and Water UK National Classifications (NC’s). NC1 classification.
A low risk confined space is one where there is adequate natural or mechanical ventilation, where access appears simple and unobstructed, and where there is no likely risk of flooding. Examples of low risk confined spaces include pub cellars, valve chambers and stairwells.
Candidates will learn how to:
- Prepare to work safely in low risk confined spaces.
- Enter and exit low risk confined spaces safely
- Use equipment and tools safely
- Follow working procedures and work safely
- Deal with emergencies
- Understand the principles of working in low risk confined spaces
- Understand standard protocols for working in low risk confined spaces

This course is taught by highly experienced instructors. All of our trainers have worked in hazardous environments – so they understand the issues and working conditions a delegate may face at work.
The majority of our trainers are also real-life rescuers who have been part of emergency operations in the UK and around the world.

Certification/Accreditation
Delegates need to pass a written test and a practical assessment to pass this course and receive certification. Those who complete the course can choose to receive an MRS Training & Rescue certificate or for an additional fee, a City & Guilds certificate. The MRS Training & Rescue certification aligns with the City & Guilds Working in Low Risk Confined Spaces Level 2 Award (6160-01).
Certification lasts for 3 years.
MRS certificates are emailed within a week of the course being completed. City & Guilds certificates are emailed as soon as we receive them (usually within 2 weeks).

Entry requirements
Delegates must be physically fit for courses involving practical exercises and PPE. Key health conditions to consider include heart disease, respiratory issues (e.g., asthma), high blood pressure, epilepsy, vertigo, impaired limb function, uncorrected vision problems, and any substance dependencies. If unsure, employers should arrange a medical assessment. We reserve the right to refuse training to those deemed medically unfit.
No. Delegates do not need to be clean shaven as this course does not require the use of breathing apparatus.
Delegates must provide photographic ID, such as a passport or driving licence, before completing any course. The legal name on the ID will appear on the certificate.
In addition, all candidates are required to bring the following PPE for practical exercises:
- Hard hat
- Workwear
- Safety footwear
- Gloves
Yes. Due to the nature of the training course and the emphasis placed on communication, there is only a provision for the assessments to be undertaken in English. Therefore English proficiency is required.
