About this course
On this 1-day course, delegates learn how to enter and work safely inside an enclosed space, use risk assessments, action plans and permits to work.
Delegates also learn how to use monitoring equipment, Emergency Breathing Devices (EEBDs), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and how to deal with emergencies.
After completing this course, delegates should be able to:
- Recognise potential dangerous enclosed spaces aboard a vessel
- Complete a typical enclosed space entry Permit to Work
- Carry out the safe testing of an atmosphere prior to enclosed space entry using typical industry test equipment. This includes understanding the equipment's maintenance, testing and calibration requirements
- Carry out a safe enclosed space entry
- Carry out self-rescue from an enclosed space
- Carry out safety attendant role

Certification/Accreditation
Following the successful completion of a written test and practical assessment, delegates will receive MNTB certification.
Certification lasts for 3 years.

Entry requirements
Delegates must be physically fit for courses involving practical exercises and PPE. Key health conditions to consider include heart disease, respiratory issues (e.g., asthma), high blood pressure, epilepsy, vertigo, impaired limb function, uncorrected vision problems, and any substance dependencies.
If unsure, employers should arrange a medical assessment. We reserve the right to refuse training to those deemed medically unfit.
Delegates using manriding or fall arrest equipment must not exceed a weight limit of 127kg (20 stone). Customers may use their own equipment if the assessor confirms it is fit for purpose, properly calibrated, and compatible with course equipment.
Ideally yes, as this course involves the wearing of escape breathing apparatus and facial hair can prevent a proper seal between the mask and the wearer’s face. However, we can provide hooded style BA if delegates are not clean shaven.
Delegates must provide photographic ID, such as a passport or driving licence, before completing any course. The legal name on the ID will appear on the certificate.
In addition, all candidates are required to bring the following PPE for practical exercises:
- Hard hat
- Workwear
- Safety footwear
- Gloves
Yes. Due to the nature of the training course and the emphasis placed on communication, there is only a provision for the assessments to be undertaken in English. Therefore English proficiency is required.
