Do I Need First Aid Training or a First Aider?

By law, you must make appropriate first-aid arrangements for your workplace. You are responsible for making sure that any ill or injured employees at work receive immediate attention.
The ‘First Aid Regulations 1981’ legislation was put in place to protect and safeguard workers in the work environment to lower significant risk.
Employers must carry out risk assessments regularly to establish what provision for first-aid is required, considering factors including the workplace, workforce and hazards present. Since accidents and illness can happen at any time, it is important to be prepared and that first aid is readily available to those who require it. HSE will prosecute in cases where there is clear significant risk, a persistent poor compliance, or disregard for established standards. Employers have a legal responsibility regarding the safety of their workers, and should appoint a person to take charge in an incident.
Smaller, low risk workplaces may only need the minimum provision for first aid, but there are circumstances that require greater provision, which should be determined by a risk assessment. For businesses with between 25-50 people, HSE states there should be at least one first-aider trained in ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’. By law, even with an employee count less than 5, there should be at least one appointed person.
