This MCA regulated Security Awareness course provides all seafarers, the education and training in personal survival techniques to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency (KUP) requirements.
It is one of five courses that together make up the STCW Basic Safety Training Course - an essential qualification for anyone wishing to work on commercial ships.
The Proficiency in Security Awareness course will be delivered from a purpose-built classroom to support STCW instruction.
This course takes delegates through the standards of competence required in terms of security awareness on board a ship. These are:
- Contribute to the enhancement of the maritime security through heightened awareness
- Recognition of security threats
- Understanding of the need for and methods of maintain security awareness and vigilance
By the end of the course delegates will:
- Be aware of the importance of ship security and the roles of those involved in its provision.
- Be aware of the requirements and measure to maintain ship security.
- Be able to recognise and report and security threat

All MRS Training & Rescue instructors that deliver this course are existing rescue operators who deliver specialist rescue training for awarding bodies and internally accredited courses.
All undertake, as a minimum, the Level 3 Approved Educational Training package (or equivalent) and the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, to assess in both the work based and vocational arenas.
Delegates will undertake a written assessment and achieve a minimum of 80%.
On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a printed MRS Training & Rescue certificate.
The course is regulated by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is in line with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping.
Those successfully completing the assessments will be issued with a certificate which currently has no revalidation period - however we would suggest not exceeding 5 years.

What time does the course start and finish?
Courses start at 9am and finish at about 1pm
Do I need to bring PPE?
No – PPE is not required for this classroom-based course.
Are there any other pre-requisites?
Yes. Delegates must provide government issued photo identification on their day of training. This is a mandatory requirement and failure to provide this will prevent the delegate taking the training until verification can be made.
What is included in the price?
Course materials and refreshments are provided.
How long does it take for certificates to arrive?
The MRS Training & Rescue certificate will be provided to successful candidates at the end of the course.
When will I receive my course instructions?
Joining instructions are sent by email – which are usually received on the same day but always within 48 hours of booking.
