What is the health and safety law in the UK?

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the primary legislation covering all Health and safety. This aims to secure the health, safety and welfare of persons at work. It also aims to protect persons other than persons at work, against risks to health or safety arising out of, or in connection with, the activities of persons at work.

The act, supplemented by regulation, addresses assessing risks in the workplace, notifying employees about these risks and how they will protect them and provide training on how to tackle these risks. And how to ensure the safe maintenance of the place of work by consulting with employees on health and safety issues.

Legally, the company is not required to have a written Health and Safety Policy or record their risk assessments as they have less than 5 employees, however the benefits to the company in doing so, include;

  • Helping you to communicate and manage the risks in your business
  • identifying how your activities may affect other employer’s or contractors when you share or use another workplace, and how their activities may affect your employees
  • Having up to date health and safety information when requested from contractor prequalification and compliance management companies
  • Being able to demonstrate that you have taken reasonable steps to meet your duty to provide a safe workplace and comply with relevant legislation
  • Could prove useful if visited by an enforcing authority
  • Help insurance companies regarding personal injury and negligence claims

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) key purpose is to secure the health, safety and welfare of people at work. They have released their annual report on workplace fatality figures in the UK for 2020/21 according to RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations), and some of the key data is highlighted here.

Useful training well delivered! Clearly defined duties and checks I should be doing and a hand out for future reference.

Craig Manning, Centre for Process Innovation Limited

Done CCNSG Safety passport course. Obviously at moment things are different due to virus, all precautions put in place to make it a safe environment. Instructor made the course interesting - good use of visual aids and he was very knowledgable in the subject. relaxed atmosphere - plenty of parking spaces, would definitely recommend Training centre.

Willie Smart, Kingdom Housing Association

I had 2 courses which included safety passport and confined spaces. Both was good with a professional and enjoyable lecturer

Cameron Causton, EPSCO Ltd

Excellent presentations and knowledge with great interaction between tutor and classroom. Very friendly but concise in instruction of different subject matters. Course has refreshed myself in the importance of good work practises.

Tony Handy, ENVICO
