The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the primary legislation covering all Health and safety. This aims to secure the health, safety and welfare of persons at work. It also aims to protect persons other than persons at work, against risks to health or safety arising out of, or in connection with, the activities of persons at work.

The act, supplemented by regulation, outlines how to assess workplace risks, inform employees about these risks and the protective measures in place, provide training on risk management, and ensure safe workplace maintenance through employee consultation on health and safety issues.

Legally, the company is not required to have a written Health and Safety Policy or record their risk assessments if they have less than 5 employees, however the benefits to the company in doing so, include;

  • Helping you to communicate and manage the risks in your business
  • Identifying how your activities may affect other employers or contractors when you share or use another workplace - and how their activities may affect your employees
  • Having up to date health and safety information when requested from contractor prequalification and compliance management companies
  • Being able to demonstrate that you have taken reasonable steps to meet your duty to provide a safe workplace and comply with relevant legislation
  • It could prove useful if visited by an enforcing authority
  • Helping insurance companies regarding personal injury and negligence claims

The Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) key purpose is to secure the health, safety and welfare of people at work. They have released their annual report on workplace fatality figures in the UK for 2020/21 according to RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations), and some of the key data is highlighted here.

Absolutely. We're here to help you by offering a range of solutions. From providing a dedicated advisor who can act as your competent person for health and safety to organising risk assessments and implementing control measures / safe systems of work, we can provide the help, support and expert advice you need.

Whether you require our full service or just a little help to finalise your H&S systems, we can help with a tailored solution that is practical and jargon free.

We can help you:

  • PLAN – Determine your H&S policies and procedures and the arrangements to deliver them
  • DO – Organise risk assessments and implement control measures / safe systems of work. Provide effective information, instruction, training & supervision
  • CHECK – Assess your level of compliance by safety audits and workplace observations / inspections
  • ACT – Review your safety performance for effectiveness in managing risk and protecting your people and your business (i.e. make sure the plan is working)

We can build and develop your health and safety management system, keeping documents functional and concise - with the emphasis on their effectiveness rather than sheer volume of paperwork.

  • Competent, practical, jargon free advice
  • Tailored specific to you and not just a generic ‘package’ of information
  • Continuing support to keep you up to date with changes to legal requirements, guidance and best practice
