Embarking on a career at sea is a thrilling prospect, but it comes with its own set of challenges and responsibilities. One crucial aspect of preparing for a maritime career is undergoing STCW training – an essential requirement for anyone looking to work at sea.
What Does STCW Stand For?
STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping. It is a comprehensive set of regulations established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The primary goal of STCW is to ensure that seafarers possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes to guarantee maritime safety and environmental protection.
STCW Basic Safety Training
STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) covers fundamental safety procedures and practices, including firefighting, first aid, personal survival techniques, and personal safety and social responsibilities. Seafarers learn to respond effectively to emergencies, ensuring the safety of themselves and their fellow crew members.
Do STCW certificates expire?
Upon successful completion of assessments for Personal Survival Techniques and Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting, participants will receive certificates valid for five years.
Certification for Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety & Social Responsibility, and Proficiency in Security Awareness do not have a revalidation period, but we advise renewing your training at least every five years.

Recent courses and customer feedback
The latest STCW course we ran challenged delegates with intense firefighting scenarios and cold-water survival exercises. Now, they’re on their way to sunnier climates - for their new superyacht adventures.
The group were engaging, enthusiastic and from the feedback we received, it seems as if they had as much fun being on the course as we did running it.
